On Sunday, large swells, tides and large waves removed a significant amount of sand, leading to our ocean outfall pipeline to be uncovered. The pipeline is an essential part of the wastewater treatment system for Wonthaggi and surrounding towns, and safely returns treated wastewater to the environment.

The pipeline support was also damaged. We are doing emergency repairs to ensure the pipeline is not further damaged or impacted by future weather events.

To carry out these works, we need to access the pipeline with an excavator and will need to construct a ramp to safely access the area.

We have engaged a contractor who will commence this work on Monday. In the meantime, our operations and environment teams are monitoring the site daily.

To reduce impacts on the local environment, we are using existing access tracks where possible

We have several other control measures in place that include no go zones, fencing, signage, unexpected finds procedures and decontamination measures.

We have also notified Parks Victoria and other agencies involved with management of Baxters Beach.

At South Gippsland Water safety of people – for our staff, our community and our customers – is our number one priority.

For your safety, please avoid the affected area while we do this work.
