South Gippsland Water has taken a major leap toward a cleaner, greener future, with all operations across the corporation now powered by 100% renewable electricity.
This significant milestone will slash the organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions by 55%, eliminating approximately 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year. It’s a key part of South Gippsland Water’s commitment to building a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the region.
South Gippsland Water’s renewable energy is sourced from our own solar installations at nine of our largest energy consuming sites, green power from retailers including the newly re-established State Electricity Commission and our partnership with Zero Emissions Water (ZEW). ZEW is a collaboration of 12 Victorian water businesses and purchases renewable power from the Kiamal Solar Farm; one of the largest solar farms in Victoria.
Acting Managing Director, Mark Lynch, said the transition reflected the water corporation’s strong leadership in environmental responsibility and was crucial to the organisation’s pathway to our net zero greenhouse gas emissions target in 2035.
“This is a proud moment for South Gippsland Water. Switching to 100% renewable electricity is one of the most powerful steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint,” Mr Lynch said.
For local customers and communities, the shift means more than environmental benefits, it reflects a future-focused approach that helps protect precious water resources and ensure long-term affordability through energy-efficient operations.
“Our customers expect us to be forward-thinking, and that’s exactly what this step represents,” Mr Lynch added. “We’re securing a future that not only delivers reliable water and wastewater services, but also protects the natural environment that makes South Gippsland such a special place to live.”
South Gippsland Water continues to explore further opportunities for emissions reductions and efficiency improvements across its network, as part of an ongoing journey to sustainability.
