Residents and visitors to Meeniyan can now enjoy easier access to free drinking water following the official opening of a new Choose Tap drink fountain delivered through a partnership between South Gippsland Water, the Meeniyan Progress Association and South Gippsland Shire Council.
The fountain is the 16th installation under South Gippsland Water’s Choose Tap program, which aims to make high-quality drinking water more accessible while encouraging the use of reusable water bottles and reducing single-use plastic waste. You can find the location of our drink fountains on our Tap Map https://www.sgwater.com.au/our-community/choose-tap/.
The project was delivered following consultation with the local community to identify a location that would provide the greatest benefit to residents and visitors.
South Gippsland Water Managing Director, Robert Murphy, said the project demonstrated the value of local partnerships.
“Access to safe, high-quality drinking water should be easy and convenient. Public drink fountains encourage people to stay hydrated while enjoying local parks, walking trails, shopping precincts and community spaces.”
“They also provide a free alternative to bottled water, helping families and visitors save money while reducing plastic waste. Every refill supports more sustainable habits and showcases the quality of the drinking water we provide every day.”
“We thank the Meeniyan Progress Association and South Gippsland Shire Council for their collaboration and commitment to delivering an outcome that reflects the needs of the local community.”
Meeniyan Progress Association Secretary Fay Sinclair said the fountain would be a valuable addition to the town.
“Meeniyan is a vibrant and welcoming community that attracts visitors from across Victoria and beyond. Having free drinking water available in a convenient location is a practical benefit for both locals and visitors.”
“This project reflects the strong community spirit that exists in Meeniyan and what can be achieved when community groups, local government and organisations work together towards a shared goal.”
“We hope the fountain will be enjoyed for many years to come and encourage everyone to refill, reuse and choose tap water whenever they can.”
