Career opportunity of a lifetime: Get your head start in water

Friday, July 9th, 2021

At South Gippsland Water we’re passionate about encouraging local young people and those looking for a career change into our industry.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’re looking for a new full-time trainee to join our water treatment operations team.

Managing Director Philippe du Plessis said the two-year traineeship will equip the successful candidate to become a water treatment operations officer.

“You’ll get the best industry training on offer and qualifications you can use all around Australia and the world,” he said.

“Alongside formal training, you’ll shadow our critical water treatment team, monitoring our region’s water supplies and taking up other tasks as you learn the ins and outs of the water business.”
To find out what’s involved and what it feels like to be a water treatment officer we’re hosting an open day for those interested in this traineeship.

The open day will take place at Lance Creek Water Treatment Plant on Sunday 18 July from 10am to 2pm.

Past trainees who have completed the course and subsequently gained other roles in our business will be on hand to discuss their experiences. These include Ryleigh Coombes, Dylan Angwin and Will Egan.

Now a treatment technologist, Will Egan said he found the traineeships a fantastic way into the water industry. “There are always new challenges and opportunities at South Gippsland Water, I initially started my career as a water treatment and quality trainee, then was hired as an operator and now work as a treatment technologist,” Will
said.

South Gippsland Water’s water quality and treatment manager Bryan Chatelier oversees the program. “Our traineeship program provides you with an opportunity to start a career in the water industry as you learn a range of duties associated with the operations and maintenance of water treatment facilities, and water quality
processes,” he said.

To apply we do not assume any prior knowledge, however, a basic secondary college level knowledge of chemistry
and mathematics is required as well as a desire to develop your analytical skills.
